Elizabeth Harris chr. 27 Sep 1668 NOTES: All christening, burial and marriage dates above are taken from the filmed parish registers of the particular parish. Note: Because of the irregularity of year changes in the Gwithian Parish Register in the years 1595-98, some dates after March 24 have been double dated for that time period. Some events dated 1595/6 may actually have taken place in 1597. 1. James Harry left a will, but it is not extant. . The will of Alson Harry, widow, was written 29 April 1606 and proved 13 Sep 1606. Mentions son Richard; Jane w/o Paul Jenkin; Alson, w/o James Whita and her child; son Bennett and his children John, Jane, Alson, James and Paskas; Jane Jenken's children. 2a. Bennett's will is written 29 January 1624/5 and proved 27 Apr 1625. Mentions children James, Alson, Frauncis, Adeodatas; also John, Jane & Paskas "the other children." The first four were left separate legacies; the latter three a small amount of money between them. It appears that this was done as the latter three were already married; the first four were not. Also names wife Cheston, and the fact that the "two younger children" were not of age. . Bennett's burial is listed one day BEFORE the date of his will. It is possible that either the date of the will or the burial date in the P.R. was erroneous. 2e. Richard's will was written 27 November 1638 and proved 15 January 1638/9. Names wife Agnes; son John; daughters Jane, Blanche, Cattren, Amye; son Richard; Thomsen w/o Thomas Carthew; sister Alson w/o James White. . Since Richard's wife survived him by 30 years, it is possible that she was a second wife. If she was the only wife and mother of all the children, she would have to have died in her mid 80s. 3b. John was married to Elizabeth Michell as "John s/o Bennett Harry." . John's will was written 28 Dec 1663 and proved 26 Mar 1669. Names wife Frances; eldest son Richard; sons John and Thomas; daughters Elizabeth, Amy and Alice; granddaughter Mary d/o son Richard. . Frances Edwards was married at Kenwyn in 1625 to Nicholas Remphrey. His will named only one child, a daughter Margery. A Margery Remperie was chr. at Gwithian in 1626, the only Remphrey entry in the parish except for Frances' marriage to John Harry. Nicholas Remphrey died in Kenwyn in 1627. When John Harry died, Frances was the administratrix for his estate and the bondsman was a John Edwards of Lelant, possibly Frances' brother. . Stepdaughter Margery Remphrey is not mentioned in John Harris' will, and is probably deceased. I suspect that she may have been Margery the wife of Richard Ellis of Camborne, who died in childbirth leaving no living issue. This Margery's burial is recorded both at Camborne and at Gwithian. Richard Ellis' brother James married Amy Harris and Richard's sister Anne married John Harris Jr, Margery's Remphrey's half brother and sister. 3e. Possibly the same child as Richard--the P.R. entries at this point are very confusing; the year frequently continues into June or July before changing, and 1596 is entirely lacking entries. Some entries appear to be duplicated in 1597, and several years may have been recorded all together at a slightly later date. Many later entries from 1595 should actually be recorded in 1596 or even 1597. 3f. Christened as the daughter of Bennett Angarrack. Her christening is also recorded on the same month and day in 1695, but the entries for these years appear to be all recorded together at a later date (see above). She is named in the will of her father, and also her grandmother in 1606. 3k. Christening not recorded. Named in the will of his father, but not in the will of his grandmother (written 1606), so born after that date. 3l. Christening not recorded. Named in the will of her father, but not in the will of her grandmother (written 1606), so born after that date. 3m. John Harry of Tolsethen, usually referred to as John Harry the younger, is closely allied with both John Harry of Angarrack "the Elder" and this John's son. John the younger and John the Elder had children christened on the same day in 1640. John of Tolsethen is certainly the cousin of John of Angarrack, as only two John Harrys appear on the 1641 Protestation Return for Gwithian. Both John of Angarrack and John of Tolsethen are having children at Gwithian at this time, so they are obviously the two on the list. Since Richard's son John is named in his will in 1638, he must be the man who married Grace Angove a month earlier and appears on the Prot. Ret. The Gwithian P.R. is missing christening entries between 1608 and 1613; John and his sister Thomsen are probably born during this time period. 3n. Christening not recorded. The Gwithian P.R. is missing christenings from 1608 thru 1613; Thomsen was probably born during this time period. She is named in her father's will. 4a. Not named in the will of his father; apparently died young, although his burial is not found in the P.R. 4b. Richard's will was written 6 April 1684 and proved 26 November 1686. Mentions eldest daughter Mary, 2nd daughter Hanna, youngest daughter Alice (the younger two are to be maintained by their mother); wife Embling; Elizabeth Greebell; brothers Thomas and John Harris; Alse Chelly, widow. . Richard's wife was probably his cousin, Emblem Wills, the daughter of Richard and Alson (Harry) Wills (see #3i) 4c. Named in the will of her brother Richard Harry as Elizabeth Grebell. 4e. Thomas' will was proved in 1701. Mentions wife Ann; sons John, Joseph, Thomas & William; daughter Elizabeth Davy; granddaughter Ann Davy. . Thomas and his wife were 2nd cousins, as she was the granddaughter of Johan (Harry) Whita. 4g. Marriage also recorded 14 July 1663 at Camborne. 4h. Named in the will of her brother Richard Harry as Alse Chelly, widow. 4i. The will of Blanch's husband, Benjamin Hockin, leaves a tenement of land "where I now reside" to Blanch, and refers to this land as "formerly her father's tenement." Later Benjamin again refers to this same land "where I reside" as "formerly James Harris' tenement." 4k. Charles Cock's first child is born at Gwithian in October 1663. There is a marriage at St. Winnow of a Charles Cock and a Mary Harris in 1662, and there is no Charles Cock having children anywhere in Cornwall subsequent to this marriage except at Gwithian. Although St. Winnow is distant, it appears that Charles was possibly in service there. (Two years later there is a marriage at St. Winnow for a James Cock and Barbara ______; Charles' brother James is known to have married Barbara Andrewartha and their marriage is not found at Gwithian or the surrounding parishes. These are the only two Cock marriages occurring at St. Winnow during this time period.) . It is known that Charles wife's name was Mary, and no marriage is found for Mary, d/o John Harris at Gwithian, although John's other daughter, Jane, married there in 1660. Charles and Mary's eldest daughter was named Grace, and their second son was called John, the latter name not appearing in Charles' immediate family. They also appear to have a daughter named Agnes, the name of Mary Harris' grandmother or step- grandmother. 4n. This could as easily be a son of Richard Harry of Angarrack (#4b.). 4o. This could as easily be a child of Richard Harry of Angarrack (#4b.). 5a. Gwithian P.R. Christened in 1680, "age about 20 years," at the same time as her cousin John Harris (see note--#5d.). . Mary was married to Ralph Polkinghorne as "Mary Harry of Angarrack." 5b. Although christened in 1683, she had to be born about 1662, as she was named as the second daughter in her father's will. Also she married in 1693. 5d. John was rechristened at Gwithian as the son of Thomas Harris of Camborne, "age about 20 years" at the same time as his cousin Mary (see note--#5a.) . John's will was written 20 Sep 1729. Names wife Grace; brothers Thomas, William & Joseph Harris; sister Elizabeth Davey; kinswoman Mary Polkinghorne; kinswoman Ann Canarthan; sons Thomas and Charles. . Grace' maiden name was not given at her marriage to John in 1701. She had to be the daughter of Charles Cock, as Ann Canarthan mentioned in the will of her husband was no blood relation to John Harris, but was the daughter of William and Mary (Cock) Canarthan, the latter being another daughter of Charles Cock. This would make Ann Canarthan John Harris' niece by marriage. It would also explain John and Grace naming a son Charles, a name not found in the Harris family. . Although John's will is dated 20 September 1729, this date must be a clerk's error (the will is the clerk's copy, not the original), as John was buried on 16 September 1729. The date on the will is written out ("twentieth"); I suspect the original may have been dated the "tenth." 5j. Two Jane Curnows were buried as widows in Towednack after the death of Peter Curnow, one in 1745 and one in 1747. Jane is assumed to be the earlier one, as she would be fairly elderly by this time. . It has been alleged that Peter Curnow married thrice; secondly to Jane Williams in Merther (she allegedly being the mother of his three younger children) and thirdly to Ann Eva at Madron. In Peter's will, his wife is named as Jane, ruling out the third marriage entirely. The second marriage to Jane Williams is very unlikely. Peter's children are very evenly spaced, and his fourth child is born only four months after his alleged second marriage. Peter's youngest son Peter married Ann Harris, a niece of Jane Harris; it is more likely that Peter Jr. was married to his own cousin rather than a niece of his father's "first" wife; also Peter Sr.'s eldest son was named John, apparently after Jane Harris' father, and his second daughter (born 4 month after the alleged "second" marriage) was called Ann, the name of Jane Harris' mother. 5m. Thomas' will was written 8 July 1738 and proved 12 February 1738/9. Named wife (name not given); daughters Jane and Ann Harris; son John Harris 6a. Although born prior to the marriage of John and Grace, this would appear to be their child, as no other John Harris was having children in Camborne at this time. 6t. Phillack P.R. Peter Curnow of Towednack married Ann Harris of Gwithian. This family settled in Gwithian and had two daughters. Back to Cornish Database....
