Grace Cock chr. 25 Jun 1625, Paul NOTES: All christening, burial and marriage dates above are taken from the filmed parish registers of the particular parish. 1a. Henry's will was written 3 Apr 1615 and proved 6 Jun 1617. Names sons Thomas, William, Henry, John; daughter Annes w/o Phillipp Andrewartha; Catherine w/o son Thomas; wife Margery; also William Cock "the younger" of Paul and Richard Cock of Nanterow. The latter two are probably nephews. (see #1b. #1c. and #2i.) . Another set of Cocks, probably cousins of Henry, Richard and Anthony, are also found at Gwithian; these used the given names Reynold, John and James with frequency. 1b. Father of Richard Cock who marries Cay Williams; hence the brother of Henry Cock (see #2i.) 1c. In 1617, Marie w/o "Richard Cock the elder" is buried at Gwithian. This appears to be the Richard Cock who marries "Marye d/o Elyn Whita" in 1579 at Phillack. William Whita of Phillack writes a will in 1616 naming a wife Elen and leaves a legacy to "William Cock, s/o Richard Cock." This must be William Whita's grandson. William's son John Whita of Phillack in 1633 leaves a legacy to "William Cock of Gwithian." This does not appear to be William of Connerwartha, but instead the son of Richard who would be John Whita's nephew. Henry Cock of Gwithian in 1615 leaves a legacy to "William Cock the younger of the parish of Paul." This William had 5 children christened at Paul, but must have been associated closely with Gwithian, as Henry's own son is continually referred to as "William Cock the elder" although no other William has children christened in Gwithian. Richard Cock the elder of Gwithian must be the man who married Mary Whita, and is therefore the father of a son William Cock who is "of Gwithian" in 1633. This is probably the William who is buried at Gwithian in 1638. He would also be the same person as "William Cock the younger" in Henry Cock's will, who resided at Paul for a number of years. As this William would most likely be Henry's nephew, then Richard Cock the elder would be Henry's brother. 2a. Christening not recorded. Named in the will of her father. 2b. Not named in the will of her father, so apparently deceased. Possibly the same child as "Martha" whose burial was recorded, but not her christening. 2d. William's will was written 22 Nov 1644 and proved 16 Apr 1645. Names wife Mary and son Henry (executors); daughter Jane and her child; children Cheston, Roger, Constance, Grace, Anthony, James, Charles (each to have one year's profit from his land, in that order); daughter Sarah w/o Robert Digory, her son James and 2 daughters; son Bennett. 2i. In May 1617, the wives of both Richard Cock "the younger" and Richard Cock "the elder" are buried 9 days apart. There are therefore two Richard Cocks residing at Gwithian. Five months later, "Richard, s/o Anthony Cock" is married to Cay Williams. One month after this marriage "Richard s/o Anthony Cock" is buried. The other Richard Cock is buried in 1622. A Richard Cock had 4 children at Gwithian from 1599 to 1608. This must be the younger Richard. Henry Cock of Gwithian in his will of 1615 leaves a legacy to "Richard Cock of Nanterro." This would almost certainly be a nephew, and must be the son of Anthony Cock, as the name Anthony appears later among the family of Henry's son William. Therefore, "Richard Cock the younger," Richard Cock of Nanterro" and "Richard s/o Anthony Cock" would all be one and the same. "Richard the elder" would be a brother of Henry and Anthony and an uncle of Richard the younger (see #1c.) 3d. Estate of Thomas Cock, AP/C/1858. 22 July 1681, Mary James renounces her rights to the goods of her late brother, Thomas Cock of Gwithian, and asks that the administration be granted to William Michell of Gwithian. Admon granted 2 August 1681 to William Michell, the principle creditor of Thomas Cock, deceased. 3f. The will of Mary's husband, Henry James, written 10 Oct 1682 and proved 27 Oct 1682, named (in addition to wife Mary), Earth w/o Emanuel Messer, and Emanuel Messer's children. Earth is possibly Henry's sister. Mary and Henry had at least 3 children, but apparently none lived to adulthood. 3g. Henry's will was proved 8 Jan 1660/1. Not dated. Names sons John & William; daughter Mary; sisters Sarah, Jane, Cheston, Constance & Grace; wife Chesten; brother Bennett; father-in-law Richard Sadler. . Agnes, the widow of Richard Sadler left a will in 1671. In it she named brothers with the surname Jenkin; her son-in-law Oliver Hockin; and grandchildren John and Mary Cock. Agnes was chr. in Gwithian in 1599, the d/o Paule and Jane (Harry) Jenkin. She married in 1624, a widower, Edward Williams, and Cheston was born to them in 1626. In 1631 Agnes was married to Richard Sadler. Although referred to as Henry Cock's father -in-law, Richard Sadler was actually his STEPfather-in-law. Cheston was deceased by 1671, when her mother left her will, and had been the w/o Oliver Hockin at death. 3i. Sarah is named in the will of her father, brother Henry, and stepmother. In the will of her father and stepmother, she is referred to as the wife of Robert Diggory. Her christening is not recorded, as the Gwithian P.R. is missing the years 1607-13 of the christenings. 3j. Jane is named in the wills of her father, brother Henry, and stepmother. In the will of her stepmother she is referred to as the wife of Thomas Nowell. Her christening is not recorded, as the Gwithian P.R. is missing the years 1607-13 of the christenings. 3k. Cheston is named in the wills of her father, brother Henry, stepmother, and brother Anthony. In the will of her stepmother she is called Chesten w/o John Coser, and in the will of Anthony she is Chesten w/o John Williams. John was the s/o William Williams alias Coser, and John and Chesten's daughter is baptized in the Gwithian P.R. as the daughter of John Williams alias Coser. 3m. Roger is probably deceased by 1679, as he is not named in the will of his brother Anthony. 3q. Grace is referred to in her mother's will as Grace Batt, and her three children are given therein as the children of Charles Batt. 3r. Anthony's will was written 30 Mar 1679 and proved 28 Jul 1679. Names brothers Bennett, Charles and James Cock; sister Grace; Constance d/o brother Charles Cock; Cheston w/o John Willyams; Mary d/o brother James Cock; James s/o brother James Cock; Henry 2nd s/o brother James Cock; William, 3rd s/o brother James Cock; Anthony, youngest s/o brother James Cock. 3s. Bennett's will was written 2 Dec 1700 and proved 21 Jul 1701. Names wife Jane; daughters Margaret Phillips, Ann, Jane, Elizabeth w/o Thomas Hockin; sons Bennett, John and William. . The will of Jane (White) Cock, Bennett's wife, was written 9 Jun 1721 and proved 26 Oct 1721. Names daughters Elizabeth Hockin, Margaret Phillips, Ann Hockin and Jane Hockin; grandsons Bennet and John Cock; sister Ann Harris; kinswoman Elizabeth Wills; sons John and William Cock. (The latter two are the executors and residual legatees. William is to have the whole of the remainder of the estate is he survives John; from this I conclude that John is unmarried and without heirs, as William is the younger son). 3t. James' will was written 19 Jun 1695 and proved 8 May 1696. Names wife Barbara; two eldest sons James and Henry; youngest son Anthony. . The will of Grace White, widow, of Gwinear (written 1714), who died without issue, named the above 3 sons of James as "kinsmen," and left the bulk of her estate to James, the eldest. She also names a brother John Andrewartha, and various Andrewartha "kinsmen" who can be identified as children of another brother, Phillip Andrewartha. John, Grace and Phillip Andrewartha were all christened at Gwithian in the 1630s and 40s, children of John and Mary (Carthew) Andrewartha. There was also an elder sister, Barbara Andrewartha, christened in 1633. This would be James' wife; hence Grace White left the bulk of her estate to her eldest nephew. . James must have had an earlier wife, as James' mother in her will, written in 1660, refers to "the wife of my son James." 3u. Charles' wife's given name is listed as Mary at the christening of his daughters Grace and Mary in 1685. Charles' first child was christened in Oct 1663. The St. Winnow marriage of Charles Cock to Mary Harris occurs 10 months earlier, and is the only marriage occurring at the correct time; there is no other Charles Cock in Cornwall having children subsequent to this marriage. The only other Cock marriage occurring at St. Winnow in this time period is that of Jams (sic) Cock to Barbara _______ in 1664. Since Charles' brother James was known to be married to Barbara Andrewartha, and their marriage was not found at Gwithian or neighboring parishes, it would appear that this is Charles' brother, and that both men were associated with St. Winnow for a period of time. Harris was a common Gwithian name, and although St. Winnow is about 40 miles from Gwithian, it is possible that both Charles and Mary were in service there. Mary appears to be the daughter of John Harry of Tolsethen and his wife Grace Angove, who resided at Gwithian and had only two daughters. Their younger daughter, Jane, married at Gwithian in 1660; no marriage is found at Gwithian or in the neighboring parishes for Mary. Grace (Angove) Harry died only a few months before the birth of Charles' daughter who was named Grace; and Charles and Mary named a son John, a name not found in Charles' immediate family. 3z. Richard Cock is found on the 1641 Protestation Return for Gwithian, but is not found later. 4a. James' will was written 27 Feb 1719 and proved 19 May 1720. Names daughter Mary Uren; grandsons William & James Uren; daughter-in-law (probably a stepdaughter) Barbara Mitchell; also Jane d/o Richard Hockin of Nanterowe in Gwithian. (The latter Richard is a son of James' half- brother Benjamin Hockin). 4g. Bennett was living as late as 1707 as his last child is christened in July 1708. His wife remarried in 1712. There is an entry in the Gwithian P.R. in March 1707/8 for a burial of a ________ Cock (page torn at given name); this is probably Bennett. 4j. Jane (Cock) Hockin's will was written 23 May 1752 and proved 2 Aug 1754. Names brother William Cock and niece Jane w/o John Petherick. 4l. William's will was written 23 Jan 1762 and proved 17 May 1762. Names wife Alice, daughters Jane Petherick, Mary Clements, Alice Davey and Ann Cock; sons John and Roger. 4m. Roger is not named in the will of his father, so is probably the Roger who was buried in 1699. 4n. Mary is named as the daughter of James in the will of her uncle Anthony Cock, written in 1679. She predeceased her father, and was not in his will. She may be the Mary, d/o James Cock christened at Phillack on 2 Marc 1664/5. This christening, however, could just as easily be that of the daughter of James Cock of Gwinear (see 4a.) 4o. James is named as the son of James in the will of his uncle Anthony Cock. He is also the residual legatee in the will of his maternal aunt, Grace White (dp. 9 Mar 1715/6). . James' will is written 12 Dec 1715 and proved 9 Mar 1715/6. Names wife Mary; daughter Grace; son James; and mentions: "if my wife be with child..." . James was baptized in 1685 as an adult, along with his brother Henry and cousin Charles. 4p. Henry is named as the second son of James in the will of his uncle Anthony Cock, and is also named in the will of his maternal aunt Grace White. . Henry was baptized in 1685 as an adult, along with his brother James and his cousin Charles. 4q. William is named as the third son of James in the will of his uncle Anthony Cock, written 1679. He is not named in the will of his father, written 1695, so predeceased him. 4r. Anthony is named as the youngest son of James in the will of his uncle Anthony Cock, and is also named in the will of his maternal aunt, Grace White. 4s. This is the same Grace who was christened in 1683, along with her sister Mary. The Gwithian P.R. contains a number of adult and older children's baptisms in the 1680s; Grace' brother Charles was born in 1667 and baptized as an adult in 1685. The original 1663 entry for Grace is crossed out, as are the original entries for Graces' siblings Jane and John. . At her marriage to John Harris in Camborne, Grace's maiden name is not given. Her husband's will mentions a kinswoman, Ann Canarthan. This is the daughter of William and Mary (Cock) Canarthan, neither of whom is a blood relative of John Harris. Since Mary is a daughter of Charles Cock, then Grace, w/o John Harris must also be the daughter of Charles, which makes Ann Canarthan John's niece. Note that both Mary Canarthan and Grace Harris had sons named Charles. 4t. Mary was christened at the same time as her sister Grace. These were not infant christenings, but young adults (see 4s.) 4u. Charles' actual birth is recorded rather than his christening; he was baptized in 1685 along with his cousins James and Henry Cock. . Charles' will was written 22 Jan 1730/1 and proved 6 Jul 1731. Named sons Benjamin, Roger, Charles and John; daughter Ann. Two Ann Cocks were buried at Gwithian, in 1728 and 1729; one of these would be Charles' wife. 4v. Jane is listed twice in the Gwithian P.R., one entry appears just before that of her brother John (during the 1660s many children of the parish were recorded together in lists); both entries are crossed out, and Jane's entry reappears later in order. 4w. John is listed in the Gwithian P.R. just below his sister Jane; the entry is crossed out and the year indistinguishable; it is probably a year or two after Jane's birth. . This is assumed to be the John who married Grace Hockin as their children included a Charles and a Mary. The other two contemporary Johns are the son of Bennett Cock and the son of Henry Cock. Bennett's son appears from the wording of his mother's will to be unmarried; and since John and Grace did not name children Henry or Chesten, it is unlikely that Henry's son John was the one who married Grace Hockin. . John's will is proved 9 May 1734, and names wife Grace; daughters Mary and Alice Cock; daughter Grace w/o William Hockin and her children; son John. 4x. Agnes Cock is assumed to be the daughter of Charles. Only Charles and his brother James appear to be lax in recording their children in the P.R., and James' children are all identified in his and his brother Anthony's wills. Agnes and her husband named a son Charles, a name not found in her husband's family. Agnes' husband, Richard Hockin, was the brother of Ann Hockin who married Charles Cock, Agnes' possible brother. There is no other Cock family available in which to place this Agnes. 4y. Constance is named in the will of her uncle Anthony Cock (written 1679). She is left a gold ring, and is the only one of Charles' children to receive a legacy. Since it is known that she is not the eldest daughter, she is probably the youngest. 5f. William's will was written 13 Sep 1761 and proved 18 Sep 1761. Names elder daughter Mary Cock; 2nd daughter Alice Cock; 3rd daughter Elizabeth Cock; 4th daughter Rebecca Cock; son William; brother-in-law Hugh Reynolds of Camborne. 5i. Roger's will was written 2 Jan 1792 and proved 15 May 1793. Names Richard, Francis, Alice and Elizabeth, children of daughter Alice Carthew, widow, deceased; sons William, John, Roger and James Cock; daughter Mary Cock. 5m. Buried as James Cock of Gwithian, tinner. 5p. Gwithian P.R.: 23 Jun 1716 "Mary daughter of James Cock, deceased, and Mary his relict" baptized. 5q. Named in the will of his grandfather Halse Eva, written Jan 1714/5. 5r. Named in the will of her grandfather Halse Eva, written Jan 1714/5. 5s. Married as Henry Cock "of Gwithian." 5t. Charles Cock did not leave a will, but his wife did. Margaret's will was written 23 Jan 1782 and proved 12 May 1790. Names daughters Ann w/o Samuel Johns, and Margaret; sons John and Bennett Cock. 5u. John's birth occurred at a point when the Gwithian P.R. was almost unreadable. He was buried in 1792, age 85, therefore born about 1707. . John's will was written 3 Jul 1790 and proved 15 May 1793. Mentions grandsons John, James and Charles Cock; granddaughter Elizabeth Cock (to have clothing of daughter Elizabeth Cock, decd.); sons Roger and John Cock. 5v. Benjamin's will was written 10 Mar 1769 and proved 7 Apr 1769. Names wife Elizabeth; daughters Grace (single), Jane and Elizabeth; Richard and John Boaden sons of daughter Jane; son Benjamin Cock. 5x. Roger's will was written 4 Dec 1792 and proved 15 May 1793. Names wife Mary; daughters Mary Cock and Ann w/o William Trewhella of Towednack; sons Thomas and Roger; daughter-in-law Mary Cock w/o Thomas. . Roger was the parish clerk of Gwithian. 5y. Jane is not mentioned in the will of her father. A daughter of Charles Cock is buried in 1722, name unreadable, this would have to be Jane. 5A. Named in the will of her father. Christening not recorded. 5D. Named in the will of her father. Christening not recorded. 6r. Referred to as Alice Carthew, widow, deceased, in the will of her father, Roger Cock, written 1692. 6u. Referred to as Mary Foxwell in the will of her brother, Roger Cock, written in 1801. 6v. Roger's will was written 5 Dec 1801 and proved 7 Jan 1802. Names brothers John, James and William Cock; sister Mary Foxwell; nieces Alice and Elizabeth Carthew; nephew Francis Carthew; aunt Jane Petherick. 6x. Not named in the will of her father or brother. Her burial is not found, but she probably died in infancy, as did her twin. 6G. Roger's will was written 9 May 1797 and proved 17 May 1798. Names wife Blanch and sons James and Charles. 6O. Benjamin's will was written 13 Feb 1803 and proved 7 Aug 1803. Names sons Benjamin, Thomas and Charles; daughters Grace w/o Charles Cock, Jane w/o Richard Goodman, Elizabeth w/o Edward Bawden. 6T. Roger's will was written 22 Jul 1802 and proved 12 Aug 1802 (note: his burial date in the P.R. is given as July 5; possibly this should be the 25, or perhaps the will was written on July 2, and the clerk copied it incorrectly). Will names sister Mary Cock; sister Ann w/o William Trewhella; brother Thomas Cock; nephew John Cock; Mary w/o said Thomas Cock. 7k. Charles Cock is supposedly named in his father's will (see note 6O, above), but as there is no christening recorded for this child, I cannot be sure he exists. I have not personally seen the will, but have relied upon a secondary source; it is possible that the reader of the will confused Charles Cock the son-in-law with a son. Back to Cornish Database....
