Chapter Demographics

Our chapter currently has seventy-two members and two associate member.  We range in age from twenty-four to eighty-nine. Seven members reside in distant areas of California and nine are living out-of-state.  We stay in touch via newsletters and, of course, e-mail, if available.  Our meetings generally have in the neighborhood of 30 in attendance.  We ALWAYS look forward to occasional visits from members who are unable to participate on a regular basis.

We Celebrate our Members

Our members have given numerable hours of service to their communities.  Volunteer activities are as varied as our membership.  We have Daughters who volunteer at convalescent hospitals, libraries, voter registration, political campaigns, serve on scholarship and church committees, and assist at elementary and middle schools. Members have worked the polls, collected food and clothing for homeless families, entertained children with cancer, and taught horseback riding to handicapped children and adults.  Several members are currently serving DAR at the National (1), State (1) and District (2) levels.  We are active in skeet shooting, line dancing, duplicate bridge, tennis, genealogical research, political and church groups, and other hereditary organizations.  Our hobbies include hand-crafted jewelry, fused glass, china painting, quilting and other needlework. Many enjoy gardening; a few gourmet cooking.

About our Name

San Fernando Rey de Espana, the seventeenth California mission, was blessed on September 8, 1797, the cross was planted, and Mass was said. The Indians witnessing the ceremonies immediately offered five boys and five girls for baptism. Six- or seven-year old Huirarpagina, the daughter of Dirirmabit and Huiray, was the first girl to receive the Holy Sacrament of Baptism and was christened Fernanda Maria.
