K: Your point's well taken. An administration could theoretically reject the foreign policy application of nonviolence and perhaps it's possible they could support an approach toward examining the conflicts in our own society and working proactively toward having an organized approach to dealing with it. That's why I hold out the hope that with so many members of congress initially supporting it, the administration would look closely at the
potential at addressing issues of violence in our communities, cities, domestic violence, spousal abuse, child abuse.
This bill would create new policies that would reduce drug and alcohol abuse, new policies regarding crime and punishment and rehabilitation and look at developing new approaches for dealing with the implements of violence, including gun-related violence, looking at programs that address school violence. We were all riveted by school violence a couple of years ago. The attention isn't there today but the problems remain. Gangs, racial, ethnic violence. These are all things, we have to ask ourselves, "Do we as a country, do we as individuals have a capacity to evolve? To become better than we are? Or are we stuck with a violent society and that's the way it is, that's the way it will always be?" I don't think so. I think we can move beyond it. I think an organized approach helps to change the thinking in
this country and over a period of time can result in an America, where not only do we see that nonviolence in society, which was the dream of Dr. King, can become the practice of a nation, and from there, when that happens, that automatically has an effect on our international policies because it would create a culture of awareness for a nonviolent conflict resolution not only here at home, but around the world.
Willliamson: I think the enthusiasm we are witnessing among thousands of people is going to grow and grow and become a real political and social force that will help to counterbalance so much of the negativity that is in the air today.

K: I just want to say in those quiet moments, when we're just thinking about the kind of world we want, is this where this whole thing is headed, into violence and a descent into maelstrom, maybe there's a ray of light that we can cast into this darkness and suggest maybe there is another path, and maybe this is the time to begin a step in that direction.
